RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
The primary responsibility of the Highway Department is road and bridge maintenance and construction. Other responsibilities include signing, graveling, mowing, paving, drainage, snow removal, bridge & culvert repair, etc. The department prepares the annual budget, provides monthly expenditure reports to the County Commissioners, tracks and records all construction, maintenance, and equipment costs, and prepares annual One & Six Year Road & Bridge Project Reports and Equipment & Material Inventory Reports. Bridge inspections are performed and reported annually to the Nebraska Department of Roads.
The department is contracted with the United States Air Force to remove snow on 170 miles of County Roads used for Missile Routes and to the 38 Minuteman III Missile Sites located in Cheyenne County.
Street Superintendent services are provided for the incorporated County Villages of Dalton, Gurley, and Lodgepole, including their annual reports to the Nebraska Board of Public Roads Classifications & Standards.
Roads:
There are 1,197 miles of county maintained roads in Cheyenne County.
1,071 miles are gravel surfaced.
90 miles are asphalt surfaced.
36 miles are classified as Minimum Maintenance.
The county is divided into twelve patrol areas, each containing approximately 90 miles of gravel roads. One Maintenance Operator is assigned to each area.
The following permits may be purchased from the Highway Department:
- Road Use Permits (single trip & 6-month, for oversize loads)
- Utility Permits (for placing utilities in R.O.W.)
- Private Grading Permits (for limited work outside of county R.O.W.)
Snow removal may be done on private driveways by calling the Highway Department Office. A $65.00 fee will be charged for this service.
